Ruby Coated Lens
Take a look at the front of each telescope, refractor telescope, or even most types of glasses and you notice that they often have a blue, green, purple and even shade to them. This is a sign of Optical Coating.
Optical coatings have significantly improved the quality of the optics in the past decades. The reason for their existence is simple: Each time light passes from air to glass it loses as much as 8% of the light by scattering and reflection. That may not sound like much, but when you consider that a basic refractor with an air gap Achromat (lens with two or more elements) and a decent two-element eyepiece have 4 air-glass transmissions. So this is ((((100% *. 92) *. 92) *. 92) *. 92) = 71.6%. You lose about 1 / 4 of the telescope aperture of scattering! That does not include a mirror or a prism diagonal that will lose the light! Binoculars have a similar problem, only more so, than they internal prisms that add even more air-glass transmissions. (Glasses do not require coatings that much, but they do not cost much and are usually not hurt to add).
Therefore, optical coatings have been developed. Coatings not solve the problem of light scattering but reduce it sure as hell. A decent coating, the light scattering loss of 8% to around 4-6%. Add more Layers, or multi-coatings to improve the dispersion reduction, as well as the quality of the coating application. But not entirely end scattering.
Optical coatings in lenses are almost always of magnesium Flouride (MgFL) was prepared. They are created in a vacuum chamber. A single optical coating should have a very fine blue Color if you look at the surface of the lens at an angle. Multi-coats are a green color or even purple, if you examine surface.
In all, there are several accepted classifications for optical coatings: Coated, fully coated, multi-coated and multi-coated. They are defined as follows:
Coated means that at least one air-glass surface in the optical system has an optical coating.

Multi-Coated means that at least one air-glass interface in the system has an optical multi-coating. The rest should be at least a single optical coating.
Multi-Coated means that all air-glass surfaces in the system Tcl / Tk have coatings.
There are several variations on this theme. In Europe, optical multi-layers often "Coated" means. Adding further to the confusion is that some companies give names, their coatings. Sometimes this is justified, because the coating is slightly different than conventional coatings, it is often just marketing.
It is a dark side coatings of the worst of it, the abuse of "Ruby Coatings on binoculars.
